November 12th, 2018 Meeting: Dwight Smith

Dwight Smith | Costco

Ten years ago, Dwight Smith was starting his Costco career by pushing carts and boxing orders at the cash registers.  He currently holds the position of International Export Logistics Buyer.  His job involves supporting US exports to Costco’s overseas regions in Asia, Australia, Europe, and Iceland, representing these same regions in freight service negotiations, and serving as the primary logistics liaison for these regions within Costco’s Home Office.  He holds a BA in Theatre from UCLA and an MFA in Acting from the University of Washington.  Prior to Costco, he served as a pastor for 17 years.

Dwight and his wife, Carla, make their home in Snoqualmie, WA.  They have two children currently in college at Western Washington University.

While on active duty, he was deployed on humanitarian relief missions in the United States and across the world. At the conclusion of his military service, he returned to Washington State and became a dedicated community volunteer. Bruce and Lauren, his wife of more than 30 years, live in Puyallup. They have three grown sons and one grandchild.

He is the President of The Game Changers Inc. in Lakewood, WA, a thought leader in business strategies and provides in-depth training, coaching and consulting processes designed to help organizations maximize their human asset and increase productivity.

Eric is a highly acclaimed keynote speaker, consultant and trainer for some of the most recognized organizations across the country. He has shared his forward thinking insights with major companies such as New York Life, Dunkin Donuts, Nationwide Insurance, TD Ameritrade, USAA, Starbucks Coffee, Hasbro Toys, Alaska Airlines, State Farm Insurance, and the US Army Rangers.

Prior to becoming an authority on Leadership, Teamwork, and Leading and Managing Change, Eric learned many of the principles of high performance from his experience while playing in the National Football League with the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers.

Eric is also an avid sports fan, reader and golfer. He and his wife Cindy have two lovely teen age daughters, Taylor and Madison.

John Wolfe | The Northwest Seaport Alliance

John Wolfe is chief executive officer of The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA). He sets the organization’s vision and strategy, and guides the NWSA’s unique customer-focused culture.

Wolfe also serves as the CEO of the Port of Tacoma, a position he was named to in 2010. Before being named CEO, he had served as the Port of Tacoma’s deputy executive director since June 2005.

Prior to joining the Port of Tacoma, Wolfe served for two years as the executive director of the Port of Olympia, and before that as Olympia’s director of operations and marine terminal general manager.

Wolfe also spent 10 years with Maersk Sealand/APM Terminals in Tacoma, most recently as the terminal’s operations manager.

He is on the boards of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), Executive Council for a Greater Tacoma, Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce, the Washington State Fair Board, Federal Maritime Commission’s Export Innovation Team and Maritime Innovation Advisory Council for the Department of Commerce. Wolfe is also an executive board member of the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County.

Wolfe earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pacific Lutheran University.

Major exporter meeting coming to Tacoma in June

The Northwest Seaport Alliance is excited to welcome the Agriculture Transportation Coalition (AgTC) Annual Meeting to Tacoma June 12-15. AgTC is the principal voice of agriculture exporters in U.S. transportation policy.

The meeting will be the largest annual gathering of agriculture product shippers who source and deliver to foreign markets. More than 400 people are expected to attend, representing some of the largest agricultural exporters in the country.  Companies include local exporters like Anderson Hay & Grain and Lamb Weston as well as national shippers like Tyson and Cargill.

The event is a unique opportunity to hear from industry leaders about the key issues facing the agriculture and forest products community today. It is also a great opportunity to network with other industry colleagues to discuss best practices and new opportunities to better serve your customers.

The NWSA is sponsoring a boat cruise for conference attendees of the South Harbor terminals on June 12. The AgTC is also coordinating facility tours on Friday June 15 including NWSA terminals.

Historically, this meeting has occurred in San Francisco or Long Beach. The event is being held in Tacoma for the first time. It’s also the first time this group chose to hold this event in the Pacific Northwest instead of the Pacific Southwest.

Ali Modarres | University of Washington Tacoma

Ali Modarres is the Director of Urban Studies at University of Washington Tacoma. He served from 1999 to 2017 as the editor of Cities: The International Journal of Urban Policy and Planning. He specializes in urban geography and his primary research and publication interests are the urban dynamics of American cities. He has published in the areas of social geography, urban development, planning, and policy. Some of his recent publications appear in Current Opinions in Environmental Sustainability, Current Research on Cities, Transport Geography, and International Journal of Urban and Regional Research. Dr. Modarres has focused a significant portion of his public scholarship on urban development through an equity lens that includes global labor migration.

Brandon J. Unterbrink | BNSF Railway

Assistant Vice President, International Intermodal

Brandon Unterbrink was promoted to Assistant Vice President, International Intermodal, in March 2016, overseeing carrier relationships and international marketing.

Unterbrink joined BNSF in 1999 as a management trainee. He held various positions with increasing responsibility and, in 2004, was promoted to manager, Industrial Products Sales. Between 2008 and 2014, he served in several director- level roles in Consumer Products, including Product Planning and Development, Sales and Marketing. In 2014, he was promoted to general director, Agricultural Products, with responsibility for ethanol, sweeteners and fertilizer.

Personal

Unterbrink lives in Keller, Texas, with his wife Emiley and their three children.

Karen Turner Lee | Pioneer Human Services

As Chief Executive Officer of Pioneer Human Services, Karen Lee leads one of the nation’s largest social-enterprise business organizations. Under Karen’s leadership, Pioneer successfully operates several businesses that generate revenue to meet customer needs and bottom line expectations that help fund its social mission.

Karen leads Pioneer’s unique business model and its 900 plus employees in over 60 locations throughout the state of Washington. Pioneer serves approximately 10,000 people annually through its job training, employment and other services to recover and rehabilitate their lives after experiences with criminal justice and substance use disorder.

Pioneer’s major business enterprise, known as Pioneer Industries, is an aerospace manufacturing company with over 100,000 square feet in two plants in greater Seattle. Pioneer makes over 1,000,000 parts annually and is known throughout the aerospace industry for superb quality, on time delivery and customer service.

Karen has an impressive career both in business and the public sector. She served for five years as the Commissioner of the Washington State Employment Security Department. She was an executive and had several leadership roles at Puget Sound Energy. Karen was also an associate attorney at K & L Gates in Seattle.

Karen is a native Washingtonian and is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Law. She is Washington’s first female African American graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. There she earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Russian Studies and a minor in engineering. She spent four years in the U.S. Army as a logistics officer stationed in Germany and Maryland.

Active in the community, Karen is a trustee at Western Washington University and a member of the Regence Blue Shield (Health Care) and U.S. Bank Washington Advisory Boards. She is also an appointed member of Washington’s Statewide Reentry Council. Karen has been named one of “Seattle’s Women of Influence” by the Puget Sound Business Journal, and more recently, received an “Executive Excellence” award from Seattle Business Magazine.
